Cain & Abel : its a fancy name. Well, its a password cracker for windows operating systems.
Cain has a lot of features. It can scan for wireless networks and try to hack in. It can try to decrypt database files like those of dBase, Excel, MS Access, FoxPro, etc.
Brute force attack is a method of cracking a password (or decrypting a cryptographic scheme by sequentially trying a large number of possibilities). For example, aa, ab, ac, etc. Well, it can take for years with an ordinary PC to crack a big password, even 7 characters long! Well, this is the main method to scan for a password. In dictionary password cracking, the words on the dictionary are tried rather than the combination of characters that can only mean gibberish. A rainbow table is a list of the hash codes for many passwords. It is done because hashing a data and comparing it is very fast compared to brute forcing. Many other features like the WEP Cracker, sniffer, etc make this a really good tool. It can also crack the passwords for windows accounts from the SAM file (the file used to store windows accounts information: username & passwords).
Cain & Abel is made of two parts. Cain is the first part of the program. It is the part we usually use, with a windows graphical user interface. Abel is created as a Windows NT service, Abel.exe and Abel.dll. It can be installed to run on the background sniffing the network. So, some anti viruses may list the program as a virus or backdoor.
