3D Software Object Modeller (3DSOM) is an outstanding program that allows you to exhibit real objects as 3D images, including effects like depth, tickness and texture. The development of the process is not difficult per se. Around twenty pictures of a real object should be taken from different angles with a camera - preferably mounted on a tripoid. This object should be arranged on a toggle calibration mat. This calibration mat helps 3DSOM to determine the angle from which each picture is taken. 3DSOM helps you correct many lighting problems, but it is preferable to have enough light and use a backdrop. After taking the pictures the next steps are: masking the images, generating the wireframe model, and exporting the finished model. One important thing to note is that transparent objects and complicated shapes may not be captured very well. The image supported formats are: JPEG, PNG, PPM and BMP. Models can be exported to Java, Flash, 3DS, Macromedia X3D, WRL, WRZ, STL and BAC formats. Trial version allows you to export models with the Java viewer format only.
