FileTask is a utility that is meant to help you with opening various types of files. In situations when the Windows operating system cannot identify what utility to open a file with, you are asked to select a utility yourself. FileTask helps you by indicating associations between file types and pieces of software that can open them, since you might not be familiar with all existent file extensions.
When trying to access a file that Windows might not be able to open, FileTask will automatically perform a scan of your computer and return a list of extensions among which that of the respective file should be found. For all the listed file types, you will be offered suggestions regarding what utilities you need to install in order to open each of them. These utilities can then be downloaded from websites indicated by URLs. Although the list you are presented with is the result of a computer scan, for some of the listed extensions you will not find corresponding applications on your computer. Also, there will be file types for which FileTask will be unable to return a suggestion as to what program is needed for them to be opened.
This utility proves to be useful since at times Windows is unable to open certain files and identifying the required program yourself can be difficult due to the great number of file extensions that exists.
