Have you ever been faced with a file which you know has a structure, but even if you opened it in a text or hex editor, it still doesn't make sense? Typically these are system and data files developed over years by in-house programmers. Or they may be client files which you have been asked to read and extract the data. Inevitably you will need to climb into the actual data and see for yourself. That's what this program allows you to do. And since you can print the results you can also draw, write, or even doodle over them without damaging the original. All it requires is a file to examine and a text editor to display the results. Latest version supports integration into Explorer context menu. Drag and drop any file onto BitByBit for processing. You can now set the character display width in the output to 4 positions rather than 3. This makes it easier to read the results. You can now optionally view the raw text as an additional line of characters in a specified font, so that you can compare the original with the processed results. BitByBit now attempts to identify whether the incoming text is in Unicode format. This is notoriously difficult as there is no clear way to identify most Unicode documents. BitByBit tries to identify if a Beginning of File Marker (BOM) is present - that is if the first two bytes are hex FEFF (254, 255) or hex FFFE (255, 254). It then uses other techniques to determine if the file has other Unicode features such as every other byte is NULL (Hex 0). This is not always successful, so check the result and use with caution.
