Mystery Stories - Mountains of Madness Download

Mystery Stories: Mountains of Madness is a casual adventure game based on the novel by H.P. Lovecraft. The story takes place in the Antarctica, where an expedition has discovered ancient ruins and strange life forms. A blizzard swept away the camp where part of the expedition was, so your character and one of your colleagues head out to the Mountains of Madness to find out what happened.

With a plot that remains quite faithful to the original story, Mountains of Madness plays out as a conventional hidden-object game with puzzles and logic mini games. Playing from both Lynn and Dyer's perspective, you will start exploring locations with your mouse to collect items, interact with the surroundings, and solve puzzles that will make the game and story move on. The cursor will take on different shapes in areas where you should look into, and the tasks you have to complete will be listed at the bottom of the screen. Objects can be found as you walk around an area and also from hidden-object scenes, where they may appear as words or silhouettes. Items with a special purpose will be kept in your inventory (each character has their own inventory), and you may need to combine some elements to create tools and complete a puzzle. If you choose the casual mode, you will get visual help by means of hints and a special button called 'advice', which will give you a detailed explanation of the task you need to complete.

You will also find side-scrolling locations that expand the investigation area and also offer a great view of a place. That way, and navigating through stunning snowy scenarios that include towers, caverns, secret passages, and tunnels, the game plays out at a good pace, revealing new details little by little by means of notes, clues, and hieroglyphs that you will need to decipher.

Overall, I found the game quite entertaining, with an engaging story, but rather average when it comes to gameplay. While it does add some small twists to the usual puzzles and HOGs (you play from two characters' perspective, there are scrolling scenes, etc.) there's nothing that makes it stand out from the crowd of games in the genre. On the other hand, in my view, the atmosphere doesn't convey much of an horror feel to the game; it's more of a suspense-adventure story. The best part, no doubt, is the excellent artwork and the snowy landscapes you explore; the rest, is more of the same.
