Greenkeys is an extremely simple tool to help you improve your typewriting skills. This open-source utility can help you practice your typing speed by following the cues displayed in the program’s interface. These may refer to single letters or to full expressions and phrases. You can set the level of difficulty by choosing the texts you will be tested on.
That is actually the first thing you are asked to do – to select a “wordlist” and an “alphabet” (from the various choices offered by Greenkeys). This wordlist can be, in fact, any existing TXT file. The program will use it to extract letters and/or phrases that you will be asked to type at a speed set by you. Once you have typed at least 200 characters you will be allowed to create your own “personal training file”. You can then use this file in later sessions to check, practice, and improve your typing mistakes.
You are also given a useful set of statistics. This can be saved as a TXT file, and there you will see the duration of the corresponding session, the total number of characters and/or words written, how many of them were correct and how many were wrong, and the speed (in either characters per minute or words per minute). You can overwrite these statistics or save a different file per session, which will let you assess your progress.
As simple as efficient, this free utility can be truly useful for both those who want to start typing correctly and those who want to seriously improve their typewriting skills.
